Title: The Lakeland Wonder
(December, 2020)
Location: Golden Ears Provincial Park (BC, Canada)
Description: My personal favourite self portrait from 2020. I first found this crazy "water horse" log the year before, and had this image idea planted into my mind then... but it took another year before everything could come together to make it happen. The water level of the lake is constantly changing throughout the months (this is entirely buried under water for most of the year), and I wanted very specific conditions to add that extra element of wonder to the photo... I needed fog. And this kind of fog and light usually only happen here during the shortest days of the year, between November and January.
So, with this image idea in my mind since the previous year, you can imagine how I waited in anticipation every day as winter came around again, constantly checking the weather and lake levels and waiting for the right morning to come along. Finally, it did - conditions were aligning in the night with heavy humidity and clearing skies, so I woke up before sunrise and made my way to this location, ready to take action. It was even better than I imagined!
Shooting this didn't come easy, however. It was -2 degrees Celsius, and I had to wade through the freezing water up to my chest to reach this log, and then climb up to precariously balance myself on these sharp and extremely slippery roots (normally covered in lake water and algae), all the while trying to look as graceful as possible without falling off backwards into the water! And, add on top of that: My beloved pup (but total turd nugget), Pepper, kept trying to swim out to me through the water while I was taking these photos, thus messing up the perfect reflection. I had to carefully climb down and wade back and forth from the log to the shore several times to keep putting Pepper back. The whole process ended up taking 2 hours - you can imagine how frozen I was by the end of it, soaked through and only wearing a small dress against the below-freezing weather. But somehow, the suffering makes the result all the sweeter - this is one of my new all-time favourite images I've ever been able to create. ♥
