Would you believe this image didn’t come to fruition until 4 years after my first attempt to capture it? Let me explain: This incredible but eerily daunting landscape is located in the far north of Canada, in Tombstone Territorial Park of the Yukon. These black volcanic mountains take a few days to trek into, and the weather can turn brutal and snowy even in the middle of the summer. Of course, such a wild place as this would be high on my list of dream places to see, to experience the awe and majesty of. So for many years I dreamed of making the great journey up north to trek into the Tombstone mountains.
I got my first chance 4 years ago, in August 2019. But after the months of planning, a week of driving north, and two days of trekking, a near fatal twist of events brought the journey to an end just as I literally glimpsed this lake and the mountains for my first time. A freak snowstorm led to one of our party members taking a very bad fall, and we were very lucky to get in contact with an emergency helicopter out of the mountains during the snowstorm (and the party member lives on, but what a wake-up call to how wild and unforgiving these places can be).
So, I never did get this photo during that trip. Nor did I the next year, with the world pandemic taking place. So I delayed my return plans again… and again… until finally this year, the Great Return to my dream mountain range finally happened.
This August I spent 5 days trekking in and around these wild landscapes (where I swear dragons still live), and even though the weather was wild and cold, it seemed fitting for such an untamed place. A place where the daunting mountains of Mordor met with the fragile beauty of the wild flowers… and here I stood between them, feeling the Spirit of the North that entwined us all.
